Tuesdays with Dorie

Caramel_flan Whoever wouldda thunk?  Certainly not me, but there's a new group on the web called Tuesdays with Dorie, and they're baking a recipe a week from Baking From My Home to Yours.  It's really terrific and I'm touched, flattered and frankly amazed.

The group was started a month or two ago by Laurie of Quirky Cupcake with the idea that every week avid bakers would have the chance to bake together and share their triumphs and frustrations.  Laurie began the group with three other bakers and now there are more than 80 bloggers, and several non-bloggers, too, baking every week and, as the group's name suggests, posting their results on Tuesdays.    It's so, so, so exciting.

This week's recipe was an ambitious one: Brioche Raisin Snails (page 56), chosen by Culinary Concoctions by Peabody.  Yes, the group's recipe is chosen by a different Tuesdays-with-Dorie member each week and, because they're bakers and therefore an orderly lot, there's a method by which members are tapped to be the chooser.

I've visited a bunch of the blogs to see this week's results and they're wonderful!  I can't tell you how thrilling it is for me to see so many people making such great stuff.  And the snails recipe, with its buttery yeast dough, pastry cream, rum-flamed raisins and need for patience - there's no rushing a yeast dough - was a real challenge.  Next week's recipe is the Caramel-Topped Flan (both simple and delicious), pictured here.

If this sounds like fun to you, go to Tuesdays with Dorie and sign on.  All are welcome (bloggers and non-bloggers), no matter your baking skills - there are plenty of beginners in the group, which is another reason I think it's so good.

Many thanks to Laurie for thinking up this great idea, developing the website and encouraging everyone to bake, bake, bake!

Hi Dorie...you have quite a great cult following, & we've enjoyed an excellent months' challenge at Daring Bakers this month with your Party Cake. I was amazed at the creativity & appreciaition for the cake. Hopefully will be the proud owner of your book one day! Cheers

I just finished my very first recipe from, Baking: from my home to yours, for my first Tuesdays with Dorie event. Delicious! Thank you! I can't wait to explore your recipes. Thank you for your wisdom and support of the group. This is all such an inspiration for me.

I just joined TWD this week (I gave up baking for Lent, yikes!) and will be doing my first challenge soon. I received Baking: From My Home to Yours as a birthday gift on Sunday and just last night I was flipping through it, bookmarking recipe after recipe that I can't wait to try. Even my husband picked some out that he wants to make. I've already decided to give copies of your cookbook to several friends that are getting married soon. I can't wait to learn and practice new baking skills with your cookbook! Thank you!

Hi Dorie, I've just purchased your book (better late than never and I can finally return the library copy I've had for five weeks) and this group seems like a great way to start baking my way through it! Thanks for such a wonderful book, I'm so excited to finally own it.

They are a great bunch of bakers! I agree with Peabody - we will all need a new book eventually =)

Dorie, I had purchased your book when it first came out but was embarassed to say I had not baked very many recipes from it until I joined the Tuesdays With Dorie group. My book has more than paid for itself since then and my husband thanks both you and the group for all the lovely treats he has been receiving. I guess as a chef myself, I was a bit like the plumber who's pipes are always leaking . . . cooking up a storm and baking at work, but not so much at home, well at least not the baking that is. I think your book is lovely and I am really enjoying exploring it one recipe at a time and I love all the feedback that comes from the other members of the group! It makes me feel good to know that you also support it!

I am German speaking and your recipe appeared in German:

I am glad that TWD let me to buy your fabulous cookbook a wonderful excuse, my family is pleased, that I plan to bake once a week. The raisin snails were great! The tast reminds me of "Kopenhagener"

dorie, thank you for all your kind words! i am not one for cookbooks, as i already have to little room in my tiny apartment, but peabody convinced me that some cookbooks are just worth having. so when i asked her which books i should get, she insisted that yours was one of them. i am so happy i added it to my christmas list this past year, as i have really enjoyed everything i have made out of it! i am still tickled pink that you left a comment on my blog a while back when the TWD group was just starting :) i'm amazed at how quickly it has grown, but at the same time i'm not all that surprised, given how wonderful your book is. baking a recipe from it once a week seemed rather daunting and i was hesitant to join, but so far i haven't missed a week! thanks again for all your support, and for writing such a wonderful cookbook :)

Hi Dorie- Thank you so much for your support and inspiration! It's been so wonderful to be able to explore the recipes in your book with a group of people from all over the world. I was so excited about your Brown Sugar Apple Cheesecake recipe that I made a podcast out of it for my blog. You've created something special, and I just wanted you to know that I truly treasure your book and the experiences that have come from it.

Thanks for a wonderful book with amazing recipes! It's fun to test my abilities and try things I never would have tried without your book!

I know one day Dorie you will have your own cult. I think this is the start of it. :)
Thanks so much for creating such wonderful recipes for us to make. Of course, we will eventually run out...so you best get working on a new cookbook for us! :)

Don't forget that some of the members are french speaking like; Les Gourmandises D'Isa and so your recipe would appear on their site in french!

Ne pas ooublier que certains membres parlent français, donc les recettes sont traduites comme sur le site Les Gourmandises D'Isa.

Thanks so much for the lovely post Dorie. I am so glad my TWD idea bloomed into this fabulous "cult"! LOL I look forward with much anticipation to hear what the new recipe will be every week, and even though I wait till the last possible second to get it done, I just love baking. Well and the tasting, too. Looking through all the beautiful TWD'er blogs is a nice way to spend my Tuesday evenings.

The only question now is, what book do we bake through when we are done with Baking? My vote is for Paris Sweets! ;)

I am not an official member of Tuesdays with Dorie, but I am working my way through Baking from my Home to Yours. It is my favorite book. I read it every night before bed:) All of the recipes are fabulous! I am glad a group has taken the challenge to bake something every week!! If I wasn't busy planning a wedding I would join:)

Dorie, it's so great that you are so supportive of our group. I am absolutely loving making your recipes each week; they are all so easy to follow and usually turn out great results (except when the baker creates disaster :)). Thanks for the support and I can't wait to bake my way through the whole cookbook!

Hi Dorie! I just joined TWD last week, so Brioche Raisin Snails was my first project with the group. I am totally enjoying myself!
Just wanted to let you know that I wrote up an article for the Baking & Desserts section on Suite101.com yesterday. I’m the Feature Writer so I get to write what I want ;-)
It’s a review of your book Baking: From My Home To Yours! There's also a plug in there for Tuesdays With Dorie! You can find it here:

(If there's anything you'd like me to add or edit, let me know)
I hope you like it!

Thanks for your support of our group! And for your amazing Baking to provide us with wonderful, tasty delights!

Dorie, I'm so glad that TWD inspired me to buy your fabulous cookbook, and I'm looking forward to baking my way through it! So far, even the recipes that I wasn't enthusiastic over at first glance, turned out great. My colleagues and my boyfriends colleagues thank you too!

Hi Dorie, Thanks for creating such a top-notch cookbook. All the recipes have been fun to prepare and share, and as a group, we are having a great time. Laurie came up with such a wonderful idea, and I'm proud to be part of the group. Keep the interesting blog posts coming, and thanks again for touching base with us. -- Judy

Dear TwD Members:
Please send all baked goods to me. I'll taste and report back on your site, because I AM A GIVER.
Thanks in advance,
Unselfishly yours,
Casey

Thank you, Dorie, for the support and for the amazing recipes that encourage us to embrace new techniques and connect with others through baking. You rule!
-Rachel

Dorie, I think it's great that you are so supportive of our group and that you take the time to keep up with what we are baking. This group means so much to me and I look forward to baking from your wonderful book every week. Thank you for your book and for the wide array of recipes that helps us improve our baking skills and try so many great things!

Dorie, Thank you so much for your support of our group! It is wonderful to know that you are visiting our blogs and enjoying seeing what we've created. When I told Laurie I'd love to bake with her each week, I don't think either of us imagined that we would be joined by over 80 others in less than 3 months! It's been such fun connecting with new people. Thank you for providing the vehicle, Baking: From My Home to Yours, for our group to flourish!!

-Chelle
